Roses are one of the most popular flowers in the world, and for good reason. With their stunning beauty and sweet fragrance, they can add color and life to any garden or home. However, growing healthy and beautiful roses takes some effort and knowledge. Here are some care tips and tricks to help you grow your own flourishing rose garden:

  1. Soil Preparation: One of the most important steps in growing healthy roses is preparing the soil. Roses thrive in well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. Before planting your roses, add compost, peat moss, or aged manure to the soil to help improve its texture and fertility. Avoid planting in soil that has been recently treated with chemicals, as this can damage the roots of your roses.
  2. Planting: When planting your roses, choose a sunny location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. Roses also require good air circulation to prevent diseases, so choose a location that is not too close to walls or other plants. Dig a hole that is at least twice the width of your rose’s root ball and deep enough to cover the graft union (the knobby part of the stem) with 1-2 inches of soil. Fill the hole with water and let it drain before placing your rose in the hole and backfilling with soil.
  3. Watering: Roses require regular watering, especially during hot and dry weather. Water deeply and thoroughly, making sure to soak the entire root zone of the plant. Avoid getting water on the leaves as this can promote disease. Use a soaker hose or drip irrigation system to deliver water directly to the roots, rather than overhead sprinklers which can waste water and promote fungal diseases.
  4. Fertilizing: Roses are heavy feeders and require regular fertilization to thrive. Use a slow-release fertilizer that is high in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to promote strong growth and beautiful blooms. Fertilize your roses in early spring and again in mid-summer, following the manufacturer’s instructions for application rates and timing.
  5. Pruning: Pruning is an essential part of rose care and helps promote healthy growth and beautiful blooms. Prune your roses in early spring, before new growth appears, removing any dead or diseased wood, and shaping the plant as desired. During the growing season, deadhead spent blooms to encourage the plant to produce more flowers.
  6. Disease and Pest Control: Roses are susceptible to a variety of diseases and pests, such as aphids, spider mites, black spot, and powdery mildew. To prevent and control these issues, inspect your roses regularly for signs of damage or disease and take action immediately. Use natural or chemical insecticides and fungicides as necessary, following the manufacturer’s instructions carefully to prevent damage to your roses.

By following these tips and tricks, you can grow healthy and beautiful roses in your own garden. Remember to be patient, as growing roses can take time and effort. But with a little care and attention, you can enjoy the beauty and fragrance of these beloved flowers for years to come.

Diseases/Care

Thrips

Confidor based products will work well such as Trifend or Spectrum rose treatments. Without these products you can alternatively try organic/natural methods to chop off all the leaves and be sure to dispose of the cut leaves. You should chop ALL leaves at once and be sure that they are removed. Thrips spread by new infestation every 2 days if there are available leaves. I have tried this second method myself, and it worked well with all fresh growth not exhibiting any sign of thrips to date.
