Polyantha (Pol) / Climbing Polyantha (Cl Pol)

Polyantha roses are a class of roses that originated from crosses between several rose species, including R. multiflora and R. chinensis. These roses are known for their delicate, small, and numerous flowers that bloom in clusters on compact, low-growing bushes. Polyanthas have a long blooming season, producing flowers from spring to fall, and they are easy to care for, making them a popular choice for both novice and experienced gardeners.

Polyantha roses were first introduced in the late 19th century, and they quickly became popular due to their profuse blooming and hardy nature. They were especially favored in Europe, where they were used for edging, mass planting, and in mixed borders. One of the most famous polyanthas is the ‘Cecile Brunner,’ also known as the sweetheart rose, which was introduced in 1881 and named after the daughter of the French rose breeder Jean-Baptiste Guillot.

Today, there are many different cultivars of polyantha roses, ranging in color from white to pink, red, and yellow. Some popular varieties include ‘The Fairy,’ ‘Perle d’Or,’ ‘Margo Koster,’ and ‘Marie Pavie.’ With their charming, delicate blooms and hardy nature, polyanthas are a delightful addition to any garden.
